This study examined how two antimicrobial peptides, LL-37 and melittin, kill bacteria even when the bacteria change the fat composition of their cell membranes as a stress response. Using E. coli and a mutant strain with altered membrane fats, researchers found that LL-37 worked regardless of membrane changes, while melittin was actually more effective against bacteria with altered membranes. Interestingly, both peptides appeared to have targets beyond just the membrane, as bacteria could survive membrane damage but still lost the ability to grow into colonies.
