This review explains how the human antimicrobial peptide LL-37 forms stable complexes with bacterial DNA found in dental plaque, and these complexes have a dual nature. While free LL-37 kills bacteria, when it binds to bacterial DNA it actually strengthens the biofilm structure and triggers inflammatory immune responses, which may help explain why dental plaque persists and contributes to chronic gum disease.
