Mice lacking the natural antimicrobial peptide cathelicidin suffered significantly worse liver damage, higher mortality, and greater brain inflammation when infected with the parasite Toxoplasma. The study shows that cathelicidin protects against parasite-induced liver injury by dampening excessive inflammatory cytokine production, highlighting a previously underappreciated role for this peptide in fighting parasitic infections.
