Scientists demonstrated that treating saliva and dental plaque samples with the antimicrobial peptide LL-37 or polymyxin B reduced their inflammatory potential by more than 90% by neutralizing bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Both agents suppressed pro-inflammatory immune signaling while preserving anti-inflammatory cytokines, supporting their potential as adjunctive treatments for periodontal disease.
