A pilot study found that patients who had both a stroke and SARS-CoV-2 infection showed elevated markers of neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation combined with reduced DNase activity, an enzyme that normally breaks down NETs. This imbalance in immune regulation may help explain why COVID-19 patients face a higher risk of stroke and other blood-clot-related complications.
