Demonstrated that epithelial heparan sulfate inhibits cathelicidin antimicrobial activity during Pseudomonas aeruginosa corneal infection. Heparan sulfate binds CRAMP (murine cathelicidin) with nanomolar affinity in a 2-O-sulfate-dependent manner, blocking its binding to bacteria. Conditional deletion of the sulfation enzyme HS2ST in corneal epithelium reduced infection susceptibility.
