Showed that physiological vitamin D concentrations (50 nM) increase CAMP mRNA by 170-fold and hCAP18/LL-37 protein by 3-4 fold in THP-1 monocytes. The resulting LL-37 concentration (1.04 uM) reduced viability of human osteoblast-like cells while sparing monocytes, highlighting potential pathophysiological relevance of vitamin D-induced LL-37 for osteoblast toxicity.
