This review summarizes evidence that the melanocortin system — a group of hormones including alpha-MSH and its fragments like KPV — can reduce intestinal inflammation in mouse models of colitis. The system works through multiple pathways, including modulating the balance of pro- and anti-inflammatory signals in the gut. The authors argue that drugs targeting melanocortin receptors or mimicking these peptides could become a new treatment class for inflammatory bowel diseases.
