Two fatty-chain (palmitoylated) versions of the antimicrobial peptide alpha-MSH were tested against dormant and drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The shorter fragment, Pal-alpha-MSH(11-13), was the most effective — killing stationary-phase and methicillin-resistant strains, inhibiting biofilm formation, and retaining activity in standard culture media where unmodified alpha-MSH typically fails. After 18 consecutive exposures at low doses, bacteria did not develop resistance to the peptide.
