Immunohistochemistry and MALDI mass spectrometry imaging of fresh frozen human skin to detect neurodegenerative disease-associated proteins in the epidermal layer. Thymosin β4 was identified in the skin proteome alongside α-synuclein and other aggregation-prone proteins. While focused on skin as a biopsy site for Parkinson's disease staging, the study documents TB4's endogenous expression in human skin at the protein level—providing independent confirmation of TB4's presence in the tissue it is most commonly applied to therapeutically.
