Characterizes the molecular identity of adult epicardial progenitor cells (EPDCs) re-activated by thymosin β4 after MI, finding they are a heterogeneous population molecularly distinct from embryonic EPDCs. Single-cell analysis revealed multiple EPDC subpopulations with distinct gene expression profiles following TB4-induced reactivation. Establishes that adult TB4-reactivated EPDCs are not simply recapitulating embryonic development but represent a unique injury-responsive state—informing the design of TB4-based cardiac regeneration strategies that must account for the altered molecular capabilities of adult versus embryonic progenitors.
