This review traces the history of thymosin research from the 1960s, when scientists sought to identify thymic hormones responsible for immune function. While none of the isolated peptides, including thymosin-alpha-1, prothymosin alpha, parathymosin, and thymosin beta-4, turned out to be true thymic hormones, they proved to be biologically important molecules with diverse functions both inside and outside cells.
