This paper examines alpha-MSH's role in innate host defense, highlighting its presence in barrier organs like gut and skin. Alpha-MSH and KPV showed antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. The peptide also reduced HIV replication in chronically and acutely infected human monocytes by inhibiting NF-κB activation. The combination of antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties makes alpha-MSH peptides potentially useful for treating conditions where infection and inflammation coexist.
