Researchers found that feeding colostrum to newborn pigs raised their circulating IGF-I levels more than formula feeding, even though both provided equal nutrients and colostrum-fed pigs actually had lower growth hormone levels. Blocking endogenous GH secretion with a GHRH antagonist did not reduce IGF-I in formula-fed pigs, showing that IGF-I depends more on nutrition than growth hormone in newborns. The extra IGF-I boost from colostrum points to a unique bioactive factor in colostrum beyond its basic nutrient content.
