Researchers found that corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) suppresses growth hormone release stimulated by GHRH in healthy volunteers. Surprisingly, this inhibition was not caused by the ACTH or cortisol that CRH triggers, since administering ACTH or hydrocortisone directly actually enhanced the GH response. The findings suggest CRH directly inhibits GH secretion, likely by stimulating somatostatin release, and that the GH boost seen after glucocorticoid administration may partly result from suppressing endogenous CRH.
