Researchers discovered that porcine placenta contains a substance resembling growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF) that can stimulate growth hormone release from pituitary cells. The placental extracts triggered GH secretion in a dose-dependent manner, and this effect was blocked by a GRF receptor antagonist, confirming it works through the same receptor pathway. Immunological testing detected GRF-like material at concentrations of 52-63 ng/mg dry weight, establishing the pig placenta as a source of this growth-regulating hormone.
