Researchers studied how nutrition, growth hormone, and IGF-I affect the growth-regulating hormonal system in newborn calves during their first week of life. They found that colostrum feeding raised IGF-I levels more than formula feeding, while injected growth hormone further increased IGF-I, and the system responded to GH-releasing factor. The study demonstrates that the hormonal growth axis is already functional in newborn calves and can be influenced by both diet and hormone treatments.
