A sensitive blood test was developed for measuring growth hormone in the African catfish, enabling researchers to study how neurotransmitters regulate GH release in this species. GHRH stimulated and somatostatin inhibited GH release from catfish pituitary cells, and the dopamine activator apomorphine significantly raised blood GH levels, though unlike other fish species, a gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog had no effect.
