Researchers studied GH function in rats made obese through overfeeding a high-calorie diet for seven months and found that while GH response to sermorelin (GHRH) was significantly reduced, pituitary GH content, GH gene expression, and hypothalamic GHRH levels remained normal. This suggests the GH impairment in diet-induced obesity originates at the peripheral level rather than in the brain, which contrasts with genetically obese rats and may explain why weight loss can restore normal GH secretion.
