VIP, PACAP27, and PACAP38 neuropeptides were found to protect immature immune cells (CD4+CD8+ thymocytes) from steroid-induced programmed cell death. A VIP receptor antagonist based on a GHRH analog partially reversed this protective effect, confirming the response is mediated through VIP receptors and suggesting these neuropeptides may play a role in immune cell development in the thymus.
