Researchers discovered that pig pituitary GH-producing cells (somatotropes) come in two distinct subtypes with different physical and functional characteristics. The low-density subtype responded to somatostatin in the expected inhibitory way, while the high-density subtype paradoxically increased GH release when exposed to somatostatin, revealing unexpected functional diversity among growth hormone-producing cells.
