This study examined how vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and its fragments interact with VIP receptors in gut smooth muscle. Researchers found that only the complete VIP molecule could fully relax the internal anal sphincter muscle, while fragments and analogs -- including a GHRH-based VIP antagonist -- could bind to the receptor but had minimal functional effect, demonstrating that the entire VIP molecule is needed for full biological activity.
