Researchers used a GHRH antagonist to directly test whether the body's own GHRH drives nighttime growth hormone pulses in healthy men. The antagonist suppressed total GH secretion by 40% and pulsatile GH secretion by 75%, providing the first direct evidence that endogenous GHRH is responsible for generating spontaneous GH pulses in humans.
