The synthetic peptide GHRP-1 stimulated growth hormone release in healthy short children when given intravenously, with stronger responses in pubertal versus prepubertal subjects. However, it failed to elicit a response in most children with pituitary insufficiency, indicating that like GHRH, GHRP-1 requires at least partially functional pituitary somatotroph cells to work.
