Two different VIP-blocking drugs enhanced nerve-stimulated contractions in human bronchial tissue without affecting the muscle's direct response to acetylcholine. This indicates that naturally produced VIP in the airways normally dampens nerve-driven airway constriction by reducing acetylcholine release, a finding with potential implications for understanding asthma and other airway diseases.
