Rats that had one kidney removed showed a dramatic three- to four-fold increase in pulsatile growth hormone release within 24 hours, which then began declining by 48 hours. Blocking this growth hormone surge with a GHRH antagonist significantly reduced compensatory kidney growth, demonstrating that the early burst of growth hormone plays a direct role in driving the remaining kidney to grow larger.
