In patients with myotonic dystrophy, half showed normal growth hormone responses to GHRH while the other half had severely blunted responses, and there was a strong inverse correlation between growth hormone response and insulin levels. These findings suggest that the combined abnormalities in growth hormone release and insulin sensitivity in myotonic dystrophy stem from a generalized defect in cell membrane function.
