In patients with adrenal insufficiency, acute absence of cortisol did not impair the growth hormone response to GHRH, but cortisol levels above approximately 700 nmol/L suppressed the response. This establishes a threshold cortisol concentration above which growth hormone secretion is inhibited, and further increases beyond that threshold do not cause proportionally greater suppression.
