A VIP-blocking drug was used to investigate the role of naturally occurring VIP in regulating the stress-hormone axis in rats. While VIP blockade did not affect baseline hormone levels or the response to ether stress, it significantly dampened the hormonal response to cold stress and lowered aldosterone levels, indicating that endogenous VIP plays a selective role in cold-stress activation and ongoing aldosterone regulation.
