Patients with Cushing's disease showed severely blunted growth hormone responses to GHRH, and unlike in healthy controls, the neuropeptide galanin failed to enhance this response. This finding suggests that the suppression of growth hormone secretion in Cushing's disease involves mechanisms beyond simple somatostatin overactivity, since galanin -- which is thought to reduce somatostatin -- could not restore normal responsiveness.
