Hyperthyroid patients had markedly reduced growth hormone responses to sermorelin along with elevated free fatty acid levels compared to healthy controls. When the antilipolytic drug acipimox was used to lower free fatty acids to normal levels before testing, the growth hormone response to sermorelin was fully restored, suggesting that the excess free fatty acids in hyperthyroidism are directly responsible for suppressing growth hormone secretion.
