Adding the peptide SS-31 to the culture medium used to mature pig egg cells significantly improved their development, with maturation rates rising from 55% to 78% and the proportion forming healthy embryos more than doubling. SS-31 worked by reducing damaging oxidative stress, boosting antioxidant levels, and improving the energy status of the mitochondria inside the eggs. These findings point to SS-31 as a useful supplement for improving outcomes in assisted reproduction for livestock.
