Researchers created a drug delivery system using the peptide SS-31 and a sodium salt to form liquid droplets that can carry genetic cargo — in this case microRNA-223 — into cells ten times more efficiently than the microRNA alone. Coating these droplets with a red blood cell membrane protected the microRNA from being broken down in the bloodstream. In mice with acute lung injury, both inhaled and injected versions of the system reduced inflammation and reprogrammed immune cells toward a healing state.
