A protein called Sirt6 normally protects the kidney's filtering cells (podocytes) by maintaining healthy levels of cardiolipin — a fat critical for mitochondrial function. When Sirt6 is lost, cardiolipin accumulates and becomes oxidized, damaging mitochondria and accelerating kidney disease driven by high blood pressure. Treating cells with SS-31, which protects cardiolipin from oxidation, blocked the harmful fat buildup and offers a potential therapeutic path for patients with hypertensive kidney disease.
