Sepsis kills in part by causing widespread cellular energy failure, and transplanting healthy mitochondria into affected cells is being explored as a way to reverse this. Among several drugs tested to boost mitochondria before transplantation, formoterol stood out by substantially increasing mitochondrial energy output and reducing inflammatory signaling in a cell model of sepsis. Drug-enhanced mitochondrial transplantation may represent a new therapeutic avenue for a condition that remains difficult to treat.
