Study using ARPE-19 retinal pigment epithelial cells and patient-derived cybrids to evaluate MOTS-c's protective effects in age-related macular degeneration models, examining whether MOTS-c prevents RPE cell death driven by mitochondrial DNA disruption and 12S rRNA damage. Extends MOTS-c's known cytoprotective effects to retinal tissue. Establishes MOTS-c as a potential therapeutic agent for AMD—the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in older adults—through mitochondrial protective mechanisms in RPE cells where mitochondrial dysfunction is central to both dry and wet AMD pathogenesis.
