A preclinical study using female Syrian hamsters to investigate bremelanotide's neurobiological mechanism. Found that MC4R is predominantly expressed in dopamine neurons of the VTA (reward center), and bremelanotide treatment altered melanocortin receptor expression and sexual reward behavior. Provides mechanistic insight into why MC4R agonism activates sexual motivation through the dopamine reward system.
