A synthetic tetrapeptide called elamipretide, which targets mitochondria, protected mice from noise-induced hearing loss when given immediately after loud sound exposure. Treated mice showed no significant decline in hearing thresholds or nerve signal strength, compared to untreated mice that did lose hearing. This is an early proof of concept that the peptide may protect against noise-related hearing damage in humans.
