Researchers discovered that cancer-killing viruses (oncolytic adenoviruses), while effective at destroying tumors, also trigger an unwanted immune response that promotes tumor-friendly immune cells. Adding thymosin alpha-1 reversed this problem by reprogramming these immune cells from a tumor-supporting state to a tumor-fighting state. This combination approach, including an engineered virus that produces thymosin alpha-1 on its own, showed improved cancer-fighting results and holds promise for clinical use.
