A randomized trial tested whether anti-inflammatory drugs (etanercept or alpha-1-antitrypsin) could improve outcomes for patients receiving islet cell transplants after total pancreas removal. Etanercept showed early benefits in insulin production at 3 months, and there were hints that alpha-1-antitrypsin may particularly help female patients, though larger studies are needed to confirm these findings.
