Researchers developed a new lab technique to sequence entire mitochondrial genomes from five hibernating rodent species more accurately and efficiently, avoiding contamination from nuclear copies of mitochondrial DNA. Alongside the genomic data, they predicted the sequences of mitochondria-derived peptides including MOTS-c, SHLP4, and SHLP6, finding regions of high conservation across species that warrant further study. The method is broadly applicable and could accelerate research into mitochondrial biology across diverse vertebrates.
