Combining gemcitabine chemotherapy with thymosin alpha-1 showed stronger anti-tumor effects against nasal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma than either drug alone, both in cell cultures and in mice. The combination treatment inhibited cancer cell growth, promoted cell death and autophagy, and reduced Epstein-Barr virus levels associated with this aggressive cancer. The anti-tumor mechanism involved suppression of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway, suggesting a promising new treatment strategy for this difficult-to-treat lymphoma.
