Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) was shown to directly stimulate the release of both aldosterone and corticosterone from the outer layer of the rat adrenal gland in a dose-dependent manner. Structurally related peptides including a modified sermorelin/GRF compound had no such effect, indicating that VIP's action is specific and supporting the hypothesis that VIP-containing nerve fibers in the adrenal cortex play a direct role in regulating steroid hormone production.
