Rats exposed to the antidepressant drug fluvoxamine during early life developed lasting problems including increased anxiety, impaired learning, and disrupted brain chemistry. When Semax was given in the weeks immediately following fluvoxamine exposure, it reduced anxiety-like behavior, improved learning, and normalized the brain's levels of key signaling chemicals. Semax may have value in preventing developmental brain disruptions caused by early serotonin system interference.
