Children who received total body irradiation and bone marrow transplantation commonly experienced growth failure from multiple causes, including growth hormone deficiency (especially in those with prior cranial irradiation), gonadal failure, and thyroid dysfunction. Testing with sermorelin (GHRH 1-29) helped identify three patients whose growth hormone deficiency originated from damage to the hypothalamus rather than the pituitary gland itself.
