Scientists identified the enzyme legumain (AEP) as a key upstream activator of the immune signaling chain that drives Th1 immune responses in human T cells. Legumain activates cathepsin L, which in turn cleaves complement protein C3 inside T cells to produce signals needed for interferon-gamma production, while thymosin alpha-1 activation by legumain did not appear to play a role in this pathway.
