Human calcitonin was found to suppress growth hormone secretion in healthy volunteers, nearly completely blocking the growth hormone response to sermorelin (GHRH) while also diminishing the response to insulin-induced hypoglycemia. The mechanism does not appear to involve suppressing GHRH release or increasing somatostatin, and calcitonin also showed minor prolactin- and TSH-releasing activity.
