Both natural growth hormone secretion and the growth hormone response to sermorelin declined significantly with age in growing pigs. The variability of each pig's response to sermorelin depended heavily on the timing of natural growth hormone pulses, with the best responses occurring when the injection coincided with the end of a low-secretion trough, suggesting that endogenous somatostatin cycling strongly influences the effectiveness of growth hormone-releasing factor stimulation.
