Infusing growth hormone into conscious rats suppressed their natural pulses of growth hormone secretion, but did not block the pituitary's ability to respond to injected growth hormone-releasing factor. This pattern differed from somatostatin infusions, which did block the response to the releasing factor, suggesting that growth hormone feedback works not by directly suppressing the pituitary or boosting somatostatin, but rather by inhibiting the release of growth hormone-releasing factor from the brain.
