Pyridostigmine, a drug that boosts the brain chemical acetylcholine, was shown to enhance the growth hormone response to sermorelin and to reverse the suppressive effect that pre-administered growth hormone has on subsequent growth hormone release. These results suggest that the body's negative feedback control of growth hormone works mainly by increasing somatostatin release in the brain, and that this somatostatin release is held in check by cholinergic (acetylcholine-based) signaling.
